The terraced house is a grade II listed building and part of the Belgravia conservation area. The proposed alterations included demolition and rebuilding part of the rear extension of the property, introduction of new basement area under part of the garden, changes to the Lower Ground layout and the formation of new internal lift from Lower Ground to Third Floor. All the design and calculations had to be agreed with Grosvenor Estate due to the location of the project. For that purpose a special report was compiled and submitted.
Pringuer-James Consulting Engineers produced the structural scheme for the proposed refurbishment. The basement was formed by using auger bored contiguous piles to the rear and reinforced concrete walls cast in sequence to the sides. The ground floor slab was designed for additional loading from soil and plants, which are part of the garden. To provide lateral stability for the whole structure a new steel frame was introduced when forming the new rear extension. Additional stability was added by forming the new lift shaft in blockwork.
