New build provided for a rear basement gymnasium with a ground floor terrace/spectator multi function area together with a classroom and toilet block, accommodated in a new side extension. Existing retained trees, sub-station together with ongoing use of adjacent playground influenced the sequencing and excavation of the basement works.

The excavation was formed with underpinning to existing buildings, contiguous piling and battered earth faces.

The structure of the rear basement gymnasium is formed with reinforced concrete basement raft slabs, perimeter concrete walls and concrete ground floor terrace slabs and beams. The structural design provided for an 11.5 meter clear basement gymnasium area. The ground floor terrace was designed to accommodate spectator bleacher seating for outside functions.

The two storey side extension is formed with load bearing masonry walls, reinforced concrete floor slabs, supported on mass concrete strip foundations. Timber pitched roof enclosed the side extension.
