Addition of two-storey mezzanine above existing building in the heart of Soho

To limit the dead load, a lightweight timber structure was designed to form the additional floors. A steel grillage was designed at fourth floor level to create a transfer plate, picking up the loading from the timber walls above and transmitting them to the perimeter brickwork. Remedial works were required to the load bearing structure from ground to fourth floor levels and steel ‘ring’ beams were used to distribute the loads.
