Staithe House
Client: Private
Architect: Lab Architects

The project involved the design of a single storey basement under the entire footprint of the existing building in close proximity of the river Thames.

The new basement was designed with sequentially underpinned r.c. walls with special attention given to the connections between the joints to prevent water infiltrations from the nearby river. Furthermore, the entire ground floor was completely replaced with a new composite slab supported on a grid of steel beams. These beams were supported on a singles interior steel column located in a key position. This minimised the depth of the steel beams to provide more head height and reduce the digging required and also enabled the open plan areas requested by the client
