Belmont Street is located between Camden and Chalk Farm road tube station in London. The existing 5 storey office building required updating and renovation.
The alterations to the existing structure included various changes and additions to meet the client requirements and standards. The scheme included five main elements of works:
Internal refurbishment and conversion of part of the office space into residential flats. The structural involvement included review of the existing load bearing elements and some internal alterations
New 5 storey rear extension – this part of the project included new contiguous piled foundations and suspended ground floor slab to allow for future basement underneath. The proposed superstructure was a 5 storey steel frame with timber floor plates and brickwork façade to match the existing look of the main building.
New Basement level underneath the footprint of the existing building and new rear extension – The masonry walls were sequentially underpinned, the existing lift shaft was extended into the basement and new access was designed between the extension and the existing structure
Two storey roof extension – steel grillage was produced at 5th level of the existing building to transfer the loading from the proposed steel structure above in into existing load bearing structural elements.
New basement area under the courtyard parking area – the structure was designed to accommodate new swimming pool and gym. The proposals included contiguous sheet piles, facing RC walls and concrete slab supported on steel beams.
