This refurbishment project required the formation of a new single storey gymnasium above the existing two storey reinforced concrete framed structure of a school in north-west London.

The existing roof structure was stripped off and a new composite RC gymnasium floor was built off the existing roof beams. Due to the added load, the existing 18m span castellated roof beams required strengthening with a new steel frame to break the span of the beams supported off the reinforced concrete structure below.

A new lightweight steel framed roof structure was installed above this with 18m clear spans provided by precambered cellular steel beams to create a large open plan, enclosed play space.
