Architect: Contemporary Design Ltd
After the successful completion of the hotel project at Harmood Street the client appointed Pringuer-James Consulting Engineers to undertake the structural design for the neighbouring development at Chalk Farm Road. The proposals are including mixture of commercial units at Lower Ground/Ground Floor and student accommodation for the levels above First Floor.
The Lower Ground floor was formed by using contiguous piles with facing reinforced concrete walls and uniformed raft slab under the whole site. Steel frame with in-situ reinforced concrete slabs formed the Ground Floor and the Mezzanine First Floor Levels. Steel beams were used underneath the proposed steel pods forming the rooms for the student’s accommodation. To support the contractor with the difficult logistics of lifting the pods in place, part of the structure at ground level was designed for traffic load from trucks and mobile cranes.
In addition to forming the main structural scheme to second floor PJCE assisted the client in developing the pods. Truss models of the pod’s side walls have been modelled and analyzed to support the manufacturer and ensure compliance with the building regulations.
